I did not try reinstalling after switching the locale back. I suppose that is something I probably should have realized.

I use a standard NA client, but I do occasionally switch locale to Japan, because some of the visual novels I have require non-unicode text to be in Japanese in order to run correctly. Before I made this post, I realized that could be it, and i switched it back to US, but that didn't help.
In any case, deleting the two symbols seems to have fixed it, XVM is now working properly, and the auto-log-on mod, which i didn't even realize wasn't working, is working again as well. Thanks a ton, Almace.

Here's the log and .xc file. I had to pack the .xc into a .rar, because it wouldn't let me upload it as-is.

happens only on certain computers
That's what I was afraid of. And i guess that means there's no fix until someone else can reproduce and figure it out. Ty for prompt response.

You need to attach your log files, or they won't be able to do anything.

I've been encountering this problem since updating to v.3.8.13, everything in the modpack, except the things directly related to XVM will work, but XVM itself, and the hitlog will not function.

EDIT - Almace's solution seems to have worked for me. The symbols are on line 1 of the file "alpha.xc," which can be opened up with notepad, or in my case, notepad++
v.3.8.16_92 - XVM not functioning "Error loading config fire 'aslain/alpha.xc'"
