Historic Sounds Mod - removed, now no gun/engine sounds at all

So I've used Aslain's pack for quite a while without any issues - so of course I thought I'd play around with the historic gun/engine sounds mod last week... but ended up not caring for it much....  I ran the install again, unchecked those features and have the pack set to delete previous mods et al..  Now in about 50% of my games I have no engine or gun sounds at all (still have clock ticking, crash of running over objects, and others).  Starting game in safe mode I have all sound 100% of time.  Tried deleting res_mods folder and reinstalling aslains, tried 'check and repair game integrity', no change.... anyone else have difficulty removing sounds mod without issues?

What if you remove all tank skins? Try that.
